Cyprus

cyprus-clear.gif (7878 bytes)

A lot of you will already know that Cyprus is a small island in the Eastern Mediterranean, many will know that it is an island divided by a green line, with a Greek speaking and a Turkish speaking population each side of that green line and a United Nations presence to "keep the peace".  These pages are currently about the Republic of Cyprus , the Greek speaking side. The "other " side is still illegally occupied by Turkish troops. We have joined the EU as a full Euro wielding member.

Now that we have got the location and politics out of the way, lets get on with the fun, Cyprus can be great fun and she holds a special place in the hearts of many. You can read our Intro below, which gives an idea of what we have to offer and where to find it, or dive into the first set of hyperlinks to your left, which then branches off into sub categories.

Whether you are coming to Cyprus for business or pleasure, you will be sure to find what you are looking for here, it is useful to know what is going on, and where and as you read through this guide, just click on the the coloured underlined words which interest you to be transported. If you find recommendations they are for people or companies that we know to be good in their field and do recommend to our friends. To post or find local events check out our events in Cyprus, otherwise try the page for the area you intend visiting.

There is so much to do on the island that it is difficult to know where to start, but because it is an island the sea has to be first in line. Visit our Shipping and sailing and boats sections if that is what you are looking for.

The beaches of Cyprus, especially on the southern side, are generally wide and sandy. There are buoys laid out every year to mark swimming areas and boat corridors. It is easy to find a safe and sheltered place for your children to swim, and in the more touristy areas you can enjoy a drink or a meal (food guides here) practically at the waters edge while you watch them.

Ayia Napa became a popular tourist centre because of its nice beaches and the colour of the water, that inviting turquoise blue, and then the Ayia Napa clubbing. Most of the tourist areas have the seaweed cleared from them in the spring and  are generally clean and presentable, unless they get trashed early in the day.  If it's not sunny or if the children get bored take a look at kids stuff for an alternative or a bedtime story. (Especially if they have a birthday whilst you are here.)

For those of you that like water sports Cyprus has loads to offer, from Windsurfing and Boat trips to Yacht charter and  learning all about Diving.  We have a section on boats for sale and wanted, also crew wanted and available, the waters around Cyprus are perfect for Sailing in Cyprus, diving and other water sports.

Staying with water for a moment, we have to conserve water in Cyprus, it is a relatively small island with a population that increases drastically in the summer months. The way we try to cope with the problem is by rationing water to residents (currently 3 days a week) however we still seem to be able to provide it for less cost than the UK which is a wet country!
So just remember when taking those 5 showers a day to keep them short. Freshwater fishing is another activity we are covering now, and it is growing rapidly in popularity, interested in carp?

You can hire everything here from pedaloes and jet skis to parachutes. and even go bunjee jumping with the real professionals from Down Under.

If you are into horses or donkeys then we can offer you hands on riding and trekking  in Polis, Paphos, Protaras or Larnaca and a very exciting day at the races in Nicosia which is said to be one of the most picturesque courses in the world. There is also riding near Larnaca. The friends of the Cyprus Donkey are also doing a great job for our old and unwanted donks.

The mountains offer skiing in the winter and beautiful cool days in the summer, with a wealth of gorgeous scenery and some very interesting villages to visit, and if you didn't bring the right gear for these activities, never fear, we have the answer, take a look at clothes to find expert outfitters.

If you are into history or archaeology or just like old things, then there is almost too much for you to see and explore, lovely little churches where you have to get the key from the priest in the village, and ruins that you can walk through and explore without fences and barriers. You will find museums and places of interest on the page relevant to the area you are going to.

Maybe you would like to go flying and get a birds eye view if the island, or take a safari tour or adventure trek through the Akamas, or Troodos. Hire a car or go on one of the many coach trips that are available

The night life here is rich and varied, and you can find anything from English pubs, restaurants, cabarets, disco's and theme bars to all night restaurants and places of entertainment with live music and shows.   The streets are not deserted here at 3am, especially in Ayia Napa

Booze and cigarettes here are very cheap and it is not the ideal place to give up smoking , wine tasting and experimentation with cocktails and mixes could play a large part of your holiday if you are that way inclined , we certainly have the facilities at prices that make it viable, and you will have a ball.

In fact I would say that Cyprus has just about everything to offer that you could want, for a holiday, as a retirement home, as an offshore company base or as a place to bring up your children where there is still the safety to let them play on a beach and talk to strangers, who if they are locals are being friendly because they love children. Children are not only tolerated in Cyprus, they are positively pampered, you will find children in the restaurants and bouzouki halls, they are included in their parents recreation time and not just left at home with the babysitter.   See schools and education here.

If you go to the Cyprus pages, you can find camping and caravan sites, Youth hostels, Tourist organisation information, daily exchange rates, medical care info, alternatives, how to buy a duty free car , or rent one for your holiday and where to fill it up with petrol. (You can even get your weekly sidereal horoscope done here) hire a villa, apartment or old house and more.

We have animals (new feature on the donkey sanctuary) and wildlife pages where you can find Mouflon, flamingo's and the Pasha butterfly. The marine life you are likely to encounter is being added to, and the fishing section is growing. If you are interested in the fate of the sea, please sign our online petition if you agree with it. And the Greenpeace pages are here, do join.

If you wish to buy or rent a property in Cyprus, we have a new section for you where you can find New properties, older properties and rentals. You can also fill in an online form so that we can notify you when your dream property comes up or we find it. Check our buyers guide on the pitfalls to avoid when purchasing. If you are moving to Cyprus, or you are an alien here already, or if you are a Cypriot in outer space come and tell us in this aliens section. If you want to learn more about any of the subjects we try to cover here then why not order a book online, everything from The Cyprus Business Guide to that elusive Robert Service Anthology that you've just remembered about.

We would love you to sign our guest  page, and if you have any comments or questions will post our comments or try to get back to you, leave your e-mail if you want a personal reply.

We also have a views  page in which you are welcome to air your views on any subject which is related to Cyprus, and we invite you to give a mention to anything of interest about the island that we have not already covered and especially to provide feedback, recommendations or comments on any services which you find here that you think people would be interested to share or avoid. Please also comment on the services and holidays which we have delivered to you via the holiday page.

If you want any help in finding a holiday package to suit your needs, fill in our holiday form, and we promise to do our best ! Here you can specify your interests and we will send you info and prices. And from there, you will find links to lovely old houses to rent for your ...Agrotourism. or Hotels or Villas which are now off site as the demand generated dedicated sites, thanks to you.

The gift shop is a guide to some of what's on sale throughout this site, and here is a general shopping site, do tell us what you would like to see in there and we will do our best. When you've been through the window you can get the T-shirt. Gosh this page is getting long, pat on the back if you've got this far.

We have provided a search page, and it works now ! happy hunting. We also have many classified sections, for you to post  your ads for free, find them all here on any subject from penfriends to educational vacancies. The only thing we ask is that they are relative to Cyprus and that you do not post inflammatory or obscene listings

New 'Disabled Section Find out where the facilities are, the trips, the hotels that really do cater for your needs. You will also find that we now do wheelchair friendly villas, hotels and transfers. Contact us for a quote for and of those services, we also have a few cabins for the cruises to Egypt, Israel and the Greek islands. Not ideal yet, but getting there.

Below is a map to give the general idea, you can find more  maps under the relevant headings for towns and areas, and in Maps
